Threshing Days. I love the book. I brings back many memories of my childhood as well as those told to me by my parents. I have one of the paintings hanging in my home office. This book is very special, it was written my mother's cousin LaVerne Kammerude. I was thrilled that I could purchase it. The most exciting day of the whole year, with the possible exception of Christmas Day, was the day the threshing machine and crew came to the Scheckel farm. As little kids, 4 to 6 years old, our main job was to “stay out of the way.” That threshing machine was a behemoth.   In biblical days there was no machinery, so after the harvest, the grain was separated from the straw and husks by beating it manually. First there had to be a flat surface that was smooth and hard, and this was known as the threshing floor.   In Threshing Days William has gathered together his recollections of his life as a threshing contractor from the 50s and 60s and gives a glimpse into rural life gone by, where despite the hard work associated with threshing there was also a lot of fun and laughter.
